Fiber Characterization for Hyperscalers

Comprehensive fiber testing and characterization for hyperscalers, carriers, and network owners—producing documented deliverables for acceptance, upgrades, troubleshooting, and service-level compliance.

Know What the Fiber Can Support

Fiber characterization goes beyond confirming continuity. It develops a defensible picture of the optical path so owners, carriers, and project teams can evaluate readiness for new services, higher data rates, upgrades, acceptance, or troubleshooting.

Certified technical workforce: Approximately 80% of NewComm’s current employees hold credentials through the EXFO-Certified Contractor Program or the Fiber Optic Association’s CFOT program. Specialized testing is assigned only to personnel holding the certifications and qualifications required for the work, while company-wide certification continues.

Bidirectional OTDR

Analyze events from both directions to accurately evaluate splice loss, reflectance, fiber length, anomalies, and route condition.

OLTS & Insertion Loss

Measure end-to-end optical loss and compare results with the project loss budget and acceptance requirements.

ORL & Reflectance

Evaluate optical return loss and reflective events that can affect high-speed transmission performance.

Chromatic Dispersion

Measure wavelength-dependent pulse spreading across long-distance and high-capacity optical paths.

Polarization Mode Dispersion

Measure PMD characteristics that may limit performance on higher-speed systems and extended routes.

Connector Inspection

Inspect connector end faces for contamination, damage, and conditions that could compromise test results or network performance.

Acceptance Reporting

Organize native test files, traces, summaries, exceptions, and supporting documentation into a defensible deliverable package.

Fiber Testing for Hyperscale Networks

Hyperscalers depend on high-capacity fiber routes between data centers, carrier hotels, landing points, and regional network facilities. NewComm helps validate those optical paths before service activation and during capacity upgrades.

Typical Applications

  • Hyperscale data-center interconnect qualification
  • Dark-fiber acceptance and turnover
  • Route qualification before equipment deployment
  • Network upgrades and wavelength expansion
  • Performance investigations and fault isolation
  • Independent review of contractor test results

COMPLETED PROJECT EXPERIENCE

400G Fiber Readiness Across a Regional Network

A completed engineering characterization evaluated existing leased-fiber paths before deployment of a planned 400G optical system. The work produced a traceable technical package for customer and system-integration review.

Testing and Deliverables

Bidirectional OTDR at 1550 nm and 1625 nm, long- and short-shot acquisition, OLTS, ORL and reflectance review, chromatic dispersion, PMD, native instrument files, formal reports, field photographs, and punch-list documentation.

Findings, Corrective Work, and Outcome

Seven elevated-loss or reflective conditions were identified. Every flagged event was investigated and correction was attempted. Remaining conditions—including several consistent with patch-cord or patch-panel transitions on leased routes—were documented for engineering review. The completed package was accepted by the customer and approved by the system designer and integration team for the planned installation and activation.

Experience disclosure: This project was originally completed through USI Telephony by the same technical personnel and leadership now delivering fiber-characterization services through NewComm Solutions. Customer, vendor, location, circuit, personnel, equipment, and project identifiers have been removed.

Fiber Characterization FAQs

What is included in fiber characterization?

The scope depends on the network and specification, but may include OTDR analysis, insertion loss, optical return loss, chromatic dispersion, polarization mode dispersion, and organized test deliverables.

Why do hyperscalers require documented deliverables?

Traceable test files and summaries help technical teams evaluate acceptance criteria, confirm route condition, compare future changes, and support service-level requirements.

When should a fiber route be characterized?

Characterization is commonly performed before dark-fiber acceptance, before deploying higher-speed optical systems, after major repairs, and when unexplained performance issues require a baseline investigation.
